Nike's Attempts at Symbolic Interactionism

The term which was studied by George Herbert Mead was intended to show “how we learn culture and how culture structures our everyday experience” (Baran and Davis 301). Furthermore, Baran and Davis write that “social roles and many other aspects of culture are learned through interaction, through experiences in daily life situations. Over time, we internalize the rules…” (302). It is apparent that the meaning of symbolic interactionism is intended to portray the idea that people learn cultural norms through interaction with others. They do not challenge what is learned but rather accept it as “right” and therefore this dictates the so-called rules to a society.

Upon hearing the definitions of these media influence terms, I was immediately drawn to thinking about the NBA and its typical stereotypes. It is of no surprise to anyone that the NBA and basketball in general is associated with African-American athletes. The league is made up of 75% African-Americans. This, is a very strong stereotype dominating our sports nation today. However, there is little being done to alleviate this dominating image and that is most evident within sports advertising. Judith Williamson furthers this statement in relation to advertising by saying “certainly advertising sets up connections between certain types of consumers and certain products” (McQuail 300). And this is exactly what is happening with Nike.

Nike is a leading advertiser of athletic apparel. The majority of their ads have undoubtedly been targeted towards basketball fans and thus they have taken an approach to emphasize the role of African-Americans in the commercials as well as interests (emphasizing certain consumers with certain products) Fred Edmund Jandt conducted a study in which he analyzed several Nike commercials over time. He examined the language, stories, messages and other elements of the ads to see how they fit in to consumers lives and found an overwhelming majority of the time these ads were aimed at African-Americans. Although the study was done several years ago, the same results can be found today and possibly even more justified. Jandt wrote, “More systematic investigations are needed but (nonetheless) based on the premises of symbolic interactionism, Nike has packaged and presented its advertisements in a culturally appropriate manner that perhaps may promote optimal communication with Black consumers.” A copy of the study can be found here: http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=zutRiJJMBQYC&oi=fnd&pg=PA264&dq=symbolic+interactionism+and+sports&ots=VdYEdDfqVb&sig=OlRreK4kxndsB71Jax15RPYH5k#v=onepage&q=symbolic%20interactionism%20and%20sports&f=false

So in summation, it is quite evident of the strong role of Black consumers within Nike advertising with particular respect to basketball but is this a good thing? Therefore, I leave you with a few questions to think about. Is it appropriate that Nike targets African-Americans because they are the primary consumers of basketball content? Do you think ads of this sort are fair and justified? Does Nike have a social responsibility to promote its products to all potential consumers? And based on your understanding of symbolic interactionism, do you think Nike’s promotion of these ideas facilitates appropriate communication with Black consumers?

  1. As long as I can remember Nike and Jordan were the powerhouses of advertising. As of today, as Danny points out not much have changed as Nike has managed to stay on top. However, he proposes many interesting points in regards to Nike and catering to African-Americans. To be honest, prior to this post and readings I never quite thought about it. I always felt that Nike is a household name that caters to everyone.

Advertising plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives. Williamson says, “Advertising are one of the most important cultural factors molding and reflecting our life today” (299). Considering a majority of the NBA is African-American, Nike makes an effort to cater towards them. I can’t remember the last Caucasian athlete to receive an endorsement from Nike or receive his or her own signature show (Andre Agassi circa 1994?). As recent as this Christmas, Nike even went as far as promoting Lebron James and Kobe Bryants’s new signature shoes with a hip-hop Christmas Carole. Nike went as far as to recruiting hip-hop icons Lupe Fiasco and KRS-ONE. In my opinion, this was made to strictly cater to African Americans. Both Santa and the Reindeers were black, which I believe was to single out other races. As far as business wise this doesn’t seem like the smartest approach.

However, as Nike manages to prove again and again both shoes are there top selling basketball shoes. I can recall even as a kid wanting Nike athletic shoes such as Ken Griffey Jr, Penny Hardaway, Gary Payton, etc. Not one of the shoes I wanted was ever a different race other then African-American. According to Baran and Davis, “they argue that elites sometimes use media to propagate hegemonic culture of as a means of maintaining their dominant position in the social order” (201). Ultimately, what I receive from this is that the companies are protecting the images that are being portrayed in the media in order to maintain societal order. The media is very successful and they want to maintain their success and will do anything to keep it that way.

In regards to Danny’s question I necessarily don’t think it is a bad thing to cater towards African-Americans. The job of the company is to sell their product and as they have shown for decades they have managed to do so. It doesn’t matter who they are catering to, from personal experience other races will by their various products (especially consumers who want to identify with a particular athlete). I think its fine for Nike to target to African-Americans. Especially in today’s society where many African-Americans feel as if their singled out. The majority of advertising I see on a daily basis, is catered towards a majority of other races. As a business I think its important for Nike to promote their products to all consumers. However, with that being said they have other athletes to promote their products (who are not African-American). I think the main point here is that catering towards African-Americans works for Nike and society. It doesn’t seem to be affecting people from buying their products. Every Year, Nike shows that they are the most influential and dominant sportswear that we have ever seen advertised.

  2. I agree that the NBA stereotypes African American athletes today. More specifically, Daniele notes Nike and how they are guilty of this. After reading this post the first thing that came to my mind was the Kobe Bryant and Lebron James commercials.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP-p9i85sNc
This clip depicts the two as puppets in friendly funny fashion. Although it uses a humor strategy, the two are not depicted as the personalities they actually are. Unfortunately Nike makes them look more like an African American stereotype rather than themselves. Baran and Davis explain that a hegemonic culture is a “culture imposed from above or outside that serves the interest of those in dominant social positions”(201). Applying this to Nike and their advertising, Bryant and James are both in dominant social positions yet they are being displayed inaccurately. Although there is no evidence of their disapproval, advertising continues to display these athletes as an African American stereotype rather than their unique personalities.

Although this portrayal of African American athletes is harmful in the media, it has a snowball effect. “…advertisements are selling us something else besides consumer goods: in providing us with a structure in which we, and those goods, are interchangeable they are selling us ourselves”(Williamson 300). Again, these ads are doing so much more than selling a product. Instead they are telling society that there is an ideal way for you to act as an African American male. James and Bryant are seen as role models but are virtually seen as clowns in these ads.

Daniel asks if Nike ads are a good thing for black consumers and I would have to say no. Baran and Davis say that “…individuals view the culture they propagate as having reality beyond our control”(309). Individuals in a society use the media to identify their unfamiliar society around them. If Nike continues to depict these black athletes in a false matter, those who view these athletes as role models will think this is the way they have to act in reality. Through marketing research and consumer feedback Nike needs to learn the difference between humor and offensive portrayal.

Reflecting on my opinions on the topic, Nike does have a social responsibility to market their product to all potential consumers. That being said, marketing is a tactic that is strongly based on research and unfortunately is very stereotypical. Although I do think the ads affectively reach black consumers I still think that it’s wrong to market Nike products the way they do.
